Phil Hopkins is a harmonica player, percussionist and musical director who has played in more than 120 London theatre productions (involving over 4500 performances), spanning the West End, National Theatre, Shakespeare’s Globe and Royal Shakespeare Company. Phil has also played for film, tv and theatre shows which have won all the major US and UK awards – Oscar (Iris), Emmy (Oklahoma!), Golden Globe (Wolf Hall), Tony (Boeing Boeing), BAFTA (Only Fools and Horses, Wolf Hall) and Olivier (multiple including Sweeney Todd and Assassins). Phil has performed around the world in such diverse venues as Carnegie Hall, The London Palladium, the Tokyo Globe and Teatro Olimpico, Vicenza. He has been harmonica soloist for the London Sinfonietta and for West End musicals such as Porgy and Bess and From Here to Eternity. Phil is well-known for his unusual double of harmonica and percussion and has had bespoke parts written for him many times, such as that for Trevor Nunn’s production of Gone with the Wind with Phil's harmonica and percussion part arranged by Tony award-winning Broadway orchestrator William David Brohn. Phil's long career has seen him work with some of the most distinguished names in the business including Stephen Sondheim, Dame Judi Dench and Sir Tim Rice.
